O! du mein holder Abendstern (Tannhäuser)
Richard Wagner

Wie Todesahnung, Dämm'rung deckt die Lande,
umhült das Thal mit schwärtzlichem Gewande;

wohl grüsst ich immer dich so gern;
vom Herzen, das sie nie vereith,
grüsse sie wenn sie vorbei dir zieht.
Wenn sie entschwebt dem Thal der Erden.
ein selger Engel dort zu werden.

In the beginning a garden given, the earth to work and to rule.
But the apple¹s sweet taste and a blow to a brother,
And now the ground is cursed because of you.

When the waters all are bitter
and the sun scorches hot with fire,
With a thirst that makes the tongue turn black you
cry out in a sea that has died.

And if you claim the name of names and still refuse to see,
do you wait for a place, an eternal abode,
and wash your poisons down into the sea?

When the waters all are bitter
and the sun scorches hot with fire,
With a thirst that makes the tongue turn black you
cry out in a sea that has died.

Nearer the end of creation, we are still seduced by the line
that we are as gods, and people are pollution.
Look out! Your peace and safety are a lie.

A call into the blackest night
through a thundering rumbling sound
to the creator of environment,
the living water found.
